PhD Thesis Abstract

With the upgrade of the adaptive optics systems for astronomy ComeOn+/Adonis, we studied and developed a new global control system for the instrument.

Analyzing the knowledge gathered at Despa during the previous developments, we demonstrate the need for a smarter control for adaptive optics and more generally for that kind of complex instruments. We have put into practice a generalized approach of instrument control, in order to master its complexity and improve efficiency, not only the absolute throughput but also its overall scientific efficiency.

The engineering, based on a multi-agent architecture is described. Particular elements are detailed such as the event driven management, the messaging system (adapted from Irc), the hyper-media data server (Http) or the distributed database.

The use of the basic system to achieve a smart behavior is also described.

The industrial potential (scattered data integration, emerging standards, intelligent control,...) to improve complex systems like the ones of the VLT is discussed.

Keywords: adaptive optics, control, distributed computing, multi-agent system, Tcl language, application.
